This is a 2-year practical course where the student is matched with an experienced mentor who will give guidance and practical advice. Its helps the learner build skills and confidence to be able to manage a colony of bees. The student is guided towards the BBKA Basic Bee Assessment which they will take during their second year. As well as the guidance from the mentor extra help is given in the second year to prepare for the Assessment in sessions run by one of our experienced long-standing beekeepers.
The course starts in April and there are weekly session in our teaching apiary through the main season. During the winter there is a once-a-month hive inspection where we check the welfare of the bees and provide food if necessary.
During the course the Student will be allocated a colony of bees that they will look after during the course. All hive equipment is provided; you need to supply a suit, boots & gloves.
At the conclusion of the program in the second year, the new beekeeper will have achieved the BBKA Basic Certificate in beekeeping, giving them the strongest possible start to their beekeeping journey and they will be given the opportunity to take away a colony of bees (in a hive they provide)
